Commonwealth-perk of de begraafplaats van Gosselies

Het Commonwealth-perk van de gemeentelijke begraafplaats van Gosselies telt 112 graven, 10 van de Eerste Wereldoorlog en 102 van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Bij de gesneuvelden van de Eerste Wereldoorlog ligt een RAF-piloot begraven, Lt John Pugh, waarschijnlijk de laatste piloot die sneuvelde tijdens deze oorlog. Zie hiervoor de afzonderlijke beschrijving in de database. De 102 andere gesneuvelden van de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn allen piloten of bemanningsleden van vliegtuigen. Het vliegveld van Gosselies huisvestte immers ook een Duits Bergungskommando, dat in de streek de neergestorte vliegtuigwrakken opruimde en de gevallen vliegeniers hier een rustplaats gaf.

Ook hier zie je van ver het ‘Cross of Sacrifice’ staan. Het offerkruis met het bronzen zwaard, siert vele Commonwealth War Graves. Het is het symbool van de gelovige strijder naar een ontwerp van Sir Reginald Blomfield. Sir Blomfield is ook de ontwerper van de Ieperse Menenpoort.
